How to choose a Primary Care Physician?
Three specialties in medicine can act as primary care physicians, these are Family Medicine Physicians, Internal Medicine Physicians and Pediatricians. These specialists have completed a minimum of 4-year postgraduate education in a medical school and a minimum 3-year residency training.
Primary Care Physicians are different from primary care providers, these are people who did not attend a medical school but completed a 2-year postgraduate program and do not have a residency training as described for one of the above-named specialties in medicine. These are Nurse Practitioners (DNP, FNP, CNP) and Physician Assistants (PA)
As you have noticed, there is a marked difference in training and experience between primary care physicians and primary care providers, so ask for qualifications and make an informed decision
